Japanese Art Students Unite Through Art at Cool Japan Center

The Cool Japan Center proudly welcomed student art ambassadors from Japan from November 21–24.

High school and college student artists from Akademeia 21st Century traveled to Irvine from Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, and Fukuoka, joining peers from Yamanashi Prefecture and Shizuoka Prefecture. Together, they formed mixed teams to engage in an immersive, hands-on creative exchange centered on collaboration, communication, and artistic expression.

On Saturday, November 22, student teams worked from morning through night, developing their artwork through brainstorming sessions, sketching, critique, and production. The extended creative process encouraged students to merge diverse artistic traditions, perspectives, and techniques into cohesive group works.

The program culminated on Monday, November 24, when each student team formally presented its completed artwork to a distinguished four-person judging panel, composed of:

  • Hiromi Takizawa, Art Professor, California State University, Fullerton

  • Eva Evans, Laguna Beach artist and art educator

  • Haruka Igarashi, actress (Shōgun)

  • Mohannad El-Khairy, art aficionado and cultural supporter

Following the presentations, Laguna Hills Mayor Joshua Sweeney and Irvine Vice-Mayor James Mai presented awards to each of the four student teams, recognizing their creativity, teamwork, and cross-cultural engagement.

The California Young Artists Expo at the Cool Japan Center exemplifies the Center’s mission to foster U.S.–Japan exchange through culture, creativity, and youth leadership. By bringing together emerging artists from across Japan and California, the program demonstrated how art can serve as a powerful shared language—building friendships, global understanding, and the next generation of cultural ambassadors.
